“GO PLACES AND LEARN STUFF” series. This excursion will be hosted by Jill Hunger, a retired high school and college geology and biology teacher and Wisconsin history buff. Throughout the day Jill will offer insight about the geology and history of our travels through the stunning Driftless Region of western Wisconsin. After a very scenic drive through the Kickapoo Valley our first stop will be at the Norskedalen Center near Coon Valley, WI. Norskedalen, which means the Norwegian Valley, encompasses over 400 acres of wooded coulee, goat prairie, springs, creeks and fields. We’ll enjoy a fascinating and educational guided tour of the original buildings built by Norwegian immigrants in the late 1800’s. An included lunch consisting of traditional Norwegian fare including Swedish meatballs and time to explore the Visitor Center is planned.
Our next stop is the Genoa National Fish Hatchery. Founded in 1932, the Genoa Hatchery has played a major role in the conservation of aquatic species in the Midwest. You’ll be astounded at the facilities and noble work done at this site. On the grounds is also The Great River Road Interpretive Center which focuses on the history and natural resources of the Upper Mississippi River and the Battle of Bad Axe, the final battle of the Black Hawk War fought in 1832, which occurred just south of the hatchery.
Our final stop will be at the beautiful Driftless Center nestled beneath limestone bluffs and the Mississippi River in Lansing, Iowa. Our visit will include an introductory film and time to explore two floors of exhibits centering on the cultural, natural and historical significance of the Driftless Area.
This trip requires a moderate amount of slow-paced outdoor walking sometimes on uneven ground. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
